After two days of classes, Adviser Academy attendees started their final full day on Wednesday morning with an opening general session that included a short company history from Walsworth President Don Walsworth and a rousing presentation on 5 Steps to Revisions by instructor Lori Oglesbee.

Walsworth talked about his grandparents, who started the company in 1937, and his 82-year-old father and company CEO Don O. Walsworth, who runs five miles daily.

“I am still very blessed that he comes to the office every day,” Walsworth said of his father, who works in the Marceline office. The younger Walsworth has his office in the Overland Park, Kansas, sales and marketing office.

During a Q&A portion, Oglesbee asked Walsworth what his favorite charity was. She then put on a Chewbacca mask and said if he would take a selfie with her, she would pass the hat and collect for that charity.

“Then I will match that because I’m a teacher. I’m rich,” she said.

Oglesbee’s portion of the opening offered five steps that students can take to improve their writing before the adviser ever has to read it. Students need to learn to read copy out loud and mark awkward and repetitive phrasing, exchange adverbs for more powerful verbs and use spelling and grammar check.

Using memorable phrasing (a noun ending in “ion” is a verb that doesn’t have its grown-up pants on) and tools such as a toy accordion, Oglesbee demonstrated ways to make writing lessons memorable.
