Last week in the Yearbooks Blog, we began a new series of Photo Spotlights. This week, we’re doing something similar with Cover Spotlights where we will take a closer look at a new 2016 yearbook cover that really stands out.
Our first Cover Spotlight is the 2016 Liberty from Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina, which you can see above.
This cover uses various triangle shapes to create a fun, abstract design. Bold, black letters are used for the theme “INSIDE OUT,” which contrasts nicely with the white background. Just enough color is added with patches of red, yellow, blue and green.
Dimension is added by layering the words of the theme – “OUT” is placed slightly on top of “INSIDE.” To add another level of complexity, the word “INSIDE” is debossed (or pushed down into the cover) and “OUT” is embossed (or raised up from the cover). Not only can you see the levels, but when you rub your hand over the cover you can feel them too.
The triangular shapes, dashed lines, colors and fonts are all elements that can easily be brought into the interior pages. When you look through this book, you can see how the elements introduced on the cover are used on the endsheets, division pages and spreads.
As a bonus, this is an animated cover. Download the Aurasma app, create an account and search/follow “Providence Day School” to watch this cover come to life!
