The Fall 2018 issue of Idea File magazine is now available in our Idea File gallery and should be showing up in classrooms this week.

This issue is all about getting organized in the first half of the year and establishing the right foundation for your yearbook staff. Take a look at these features:

  • Tragic events can happen during a school year – from hurricanes to fires to student deaths. How will your yearbook staff deal with them? Many staffs get prepared by putting editorial policies in place to plan for the worst.
  • With their 2018 yearbook, Azle High School created one of the most popular books in school history by developing a unique theme that generated buzz and got the whole school involved.
  • Does your staff use its own project management system to stay organized and keep the yearbook on track? The staff members at Marcus High School are still most comfortable using pen and paper, so they created large, oversized Trello bulletin boards to keep track of their deadlines and wrote all about it for this issue.
  • Every staff always wants to know the latest trends, but Walsworth’s Jim Jordan explains that before you get to trends, your staff needs to understand the fundamentals of the four yearbook basics – the look, the story, the words and the images.

As always, the Fall 2018 issue includes plenty of the usual Idea File touches as well. In his newest Ask Mike column, Walsworth’s Mike Taylor, CJE, explains some of the basics of visual storytelling your designers need to know.

Adviser Leland Mallett, CJE, from Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas, wrote the newest Picture This column, which focuses on tips and tricks to keep your photos organized.

Also, don’t forget to visit our newest Caught Our Eye gallery, filled with 2018 books that were selected to appear in this issue by Jim McCrossen, adviser at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas.

Enjoy, and good luck on your 2019 yearbooks!
