Understanding the importance of a colophon

Your yearbook’s colophon, typically appearing near the back of the book, provides the reader with some important information.

The colophon indicates how your yearbook was produced and includes the name of your printing company, the number of copies, type of paper the book was printed on, cover specs, the software your staff used to produce the book and other technical details.

However there is other additional information you can include in the colophon that makes this page or spread more personal and provides great insight into the hard work that goes into creating your yearbook. You can read all about writing a colophon in the “Writing: Tell Me a Story” unit of the Yearbook Suite curriculum. This can be:

  • Complete staff list
  • Staff photos
  • An editor’s note thanking the staff
  • List of awards won by the yearbook staff over previous year

Does your yearbook staff make sure to include a colophon in the book? What details do you include? Please share in Comments below.
