Tiffany Cavicchia from Mooresville High School in Mooresville, North Carolina – a Walsworth Yearbooks customer school – was among those chosen as a recipient of the Rising Star Award from the Journalism Education Association (JEA) on Wednesday.
Cavicchia began teaching in 2003, but took on the job of yearbook adviser just within the past five years. Using her background in advertising and design, Cavicchia’s goal was to move the program out of debt but has now evolved into much more than that.
“I work diligently to empower my editors to take responsibility for their book, manage their peers and deadlines, and make leadership decisions for the betterment of the program,” said Cavicchia in JEA’s news release for the award.
Each year, JEA recognizes advisers with up to five years of experience who show promise as up-and-coming advisers. Nominations for the Rising Star Award can come from scholastic press associations, publishing companies, fellow teachers, students and parents.
The Rising Star winners announced today included:

- Annette Deming, CJE, Lugo High School, Chino, California
- Sarah-Anne Lanman, Munster High School, Munster, Indiana
- Kathleen Plows, Malvern Preparatory School, Malvern, Pennsylvania
Each Rising Star winner will be honored during the adviser awards luncheon at the upcoming JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention, Nov. 18, in Dallas.
