Summer provides ample yearbook story ideas

For many yearbook staffs, summer break is a time for brainstorming theme and cover ideas at yearbook camp, and staff bonding and training while getting ready for the new school year.

But student life doesn’t stop during the summer, which means lots of fun, fascinating stories are going on out there in the world – stories that your yearbook staff should be thinking about covering.

Every summer is unique and comes with its own trends, movies, popular vacation spots, big news stories. You don’t necessarily have to devote a large portion of the yearbook to summer coverage, but a nod to those three months is a good idea.

In our latest Coverage Spotlight, let’s look at a great example of summer coverage from a 2017 yearbook – Fusion from Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Florida.

Last summer, the game Pokémon Go was a huge phenomenon. Tons of Hagerty students, and teens everywhere, seemed to be addicted to the new mobile game. The Fusion staff did an entire spread (which can be seen above) on this summer trend, complete with a sequence of interesting photos showing different locations where students were “hunting” Pokémon.

Has your staff started to identify any summer coverage ideas for 2017 yet?
