If you need a good idea to help your recruiting for next year’s yearbook staff, or you simply want to create some good yearbook culture at your school, take a cue from Indian Rocks Christian School in Largo, Florida.

The Indian Rocks staff recently held a Yearbook Open House and allowed students to come in and learn what the yearbook staff does throughout the year and what goes in to the creation of the yearbook.

They created a station for different elements of the yearbook – photography, writing, interviewing, sports, design, Photoshop and the people section. And each station had a slideshow to share with students. There were refreshments provided as well.

The benefits of holding an Open House, like the one Indian Rocks did, are numerous:

  • Students get an inside look at the yearbook program and feel more comfortable applying to be on staff
  • It generates excitement and interest in yearbook, which can help promote sales
  • Students and teachers get a better understanding of the work that goes into creating the book, which creates support for the program

Have you ever held an Open House for yearbook? Tell us about it in the comments below.
